One of the UK’s leading suppliers of hardfaced composite components, AMB Co. ltd, has invested in a Colchester Magnum VS LS manual lathe to increase capacity and maintain a high quality service. The investment is a result of change in demand from customers. The company mainly provides to sectors such as oil and gas, power generation, marine, nuclear, defence and agriculture.

Members of Made in Yorkshire, championing British manufacturing, Albert Marsh and Bestelite Hardfacing Company Ltd (AMB Co. Ltd) are a family owned manufacturing business based in Sheffield. The company has manufactured fully machined, high precision engineering solutions covering multiple sectors for over 80 years.

AMB invested in the new manual lathe to achieve larger spindle work for critical sectors such as oil and gas, power generation and defence. The firm’s Managing Director Frazer Crownshaw says this may be a result of the change in political landscape:

“Due to the events in Ukraine it seems many companies who sit within the sectors we supply to, are diverting their supply chains out of Eastern Europe. This has resulted in an increase in demand for working with larger pieces of material that previously we may not have been able to keep in-house.”

The new machine means AMB are able to produce bigger products as well as manage expectations with customer turn around times. It's also allowing the company to make wiser decisions on what work they can achieve or subcontract out, as well as maintain consistent communication with stakeholders. Alongside the investment the company has employed another machinist and another member of the Commercial team with plans to recruit more people in 2023.

Whilst AMB can offer a range of manufacturing activities including a weld-only service and a full turnkey solution, the company also has plans to update their component-finishing cell with some new grinding facilities, which will only enhance their engineering capabilities moving forward.
